사랑하는 기도가족 여러분, 안녕하세요?

하나님께서 우리의 하나님(분깃, 기업)이 되심을 만끽하시는 한 해가 되시기를 기도합니다. 북쪽에서 내려오는 매서운 바람이 온 세상을 얼어붙게 했지만, 여기에서도 변함없이 일하고 계시는 하나님을 기도가족 여러분과 나누며 또한 기도를 부탁드리려고 합니다.

2025년은 저희 어머니(성인경 간사의 어머니)의 소천으로 시작되었습니다. 91세로 천천히 기력이 쇠하여 가시다가 결국 호흡이 약해지며 조용히 이 세상을 떠나 그리도 가고 싶으셨던 천국으로 가셨습니다. 10년 전 아버님을 여의신 후 점차 거동이 불편하게 되시면서 어머니의 가장 중요한 활동은 기도가 되었습니다.

어머니는 라브리 기도편지를 자세히 읽으시며 기도하셨습니다. 어머니는 지금 위해서 기도하고 계시는 사람이 어떻게 지내고 있는지, 구체적으로 뭘 기도해야 하는지 묻곤 하셨습니다. 그리고 얼마 후에 그 사람에 대해 정확히 기억하시며 그 다음 질문을 하셨습니다. 저희 어머니뿐 아니라 기도가족 여러분께서도 저희가 보내 드리는 편지를 자세히 읽고 계시는 것에 저희가 깜짝 놀랄 때가 종종 있습니다. 진심으로 감사드립니다.

이제 어머니는 저희의 기억 속에 고운 모습을 남기고 천국에 먼저 가셨습니다. 저희는 육신의 어머니뿐 아니라 같이 손잡고 일하던 친구와 기도의 어머니를 잃었습니다. 어머니가 생각날 때면 라브리 수목장에서 쉬고 계시는 어머니를 찾아갑니다. 그리고는 부활의 날에 하나님의 능력으로 다시 살아나 따뜻한 뺨을 맞댈 수 있으리라는 하나님의 약속을 다시 기억하며 발걸음을 가볍게 돌립니다.

부활을 믿으시나요? 아니면 그냥 “희망 사항”입니까? 부활의 흔적은 매년 봄이 되면 우리 주위의 자연 세계에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 현상입니다. 겨울에 죽은 것처럼 보이던 나무와 풀들이 봄이 되면 다시 살아납니다. 예수님도, “한 알의 밀알이 떨어져 죽지 아니하면 한 알 그대로 있고 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺느니라.”(요한복음 12:24)고 말씀하셨지요. 루이스 (C. S. Lewis)는 이렇게 말했습니다. “‘죽음과 재생’패턴이 자연 안에 있는 것은, 그것이 먼저 그 분 안에 있었기 때문이다.” (<기적>, 227쪽).

예수님은 하나님이면서도 인간으로 태어나셔서, 죽으셨다가, 그 분의 법칙에 따라 다시 살아나셨습니다. 그러기에 그 분을 믿는 우리도 예수님을 따라서 부활합니다. 말이 되지 않나요? 저는 양쪽 부모님 네 분을 다 떠나보내며 부활을 더욱 기다리게 되었습니다. 새 하늘과 새 땅에서 온전히 하나님을 섬기고 서로를 사랑하는 모습으로 만날 것이 기대됩니다. 그 때 기도가족 여러분도 만나 뵙기를 바랍니다.

장례식을 마치자마자 라브리 학기를 시작하려니 쉽지 않았습니다. 제가 식사 당번인 것을 잊어 버리는 일도 발생했습니다. 광식, 남정 집사님과 태윤, 현지씨 그리고 한 살난 ‘아루’의 특별한 도움, 그리고 헬퍼로 도와준 다연, 아키오, 진경씨가 없없다면 1월 한 달을 어떻게 지낼 수 있었을까요? 하나님께서 보내 주신 훌륭한 헬퍼들로 인해 거듭 감사드립니다.

추운 겨울은 여름과 달리 자신의 질문과 문제를 해결하기 위해 공부하기에 가장 좋은 계절입니다. 추워서 바깥 활동을 잘 못하기 때문이죠. 기독교 대안학교를 졸업하고 대학에 가서 하나님 믿기가 힘들어진 청년이 왔습니다. 기독교의 진리성에 관한 책들도 읽어 보았지만, 여전히 믿기가 힘들었습니다. 이번에는 성경 자체를 읽어 보기로 했습니다. 어려서부터 이미 알고 있다고, 성경 실력도 꽤나 있다고 생각해 왔지만, 마치 성경을 처음 읽는 사람처럼 하루에 한 장씩 씹듯이 읽으며 질문하고 답을 찾았습니다. 요한복음을 읽었는데, 1장 14절의 “말씀이 육신이 되어~”에 걸렸습니다. ‘왜 굳이 육신이 되었을까? 나 같으면 그런 선택을 하지 않을텐데. 인간들은 환영은커녕 예수님을 죽이고 말았는데 왜 굳이?’

이 청년은 요한복음을 계속 읽어 나가며 예수님의 대화에 놀라고 비유에 놀랐습니다. 그러나 예수님이 왜 굳이 고난을 자초했는지는 이해하고 싶지 않았습니다. 안타깝게도 이 청년의 2025년 1월은 여기에서 끝났습니다. 여러분의 기도를 부탁드립니다. 여러분에게 너무나도 익숙한 그 답을 이 청년이 마음으로 생각으로 인정하고 믿을 수 있도록 기도해 주시기를 부탁드립니다.

몇 달간 이단에 빠져 있다가 라브리에 온 청년도 있었습니다. 이 청년은 매일 간사와 만나 정통 기독교 교리를 배우고 이단에서는 그것을 뭐라고 가르쳤는지 자기 말로 토해냈습니다. 그리고 매주 세미나를 열어 발표하고 다른 청년들의 질문에 답하는 시간을 가졌습니다. 가족들이 연루되어 있어서 마음이 어려웠습니다. 담당 간사가 그 어머니께 그 이단의 정체를 알려 드리는 일도 해야 했습니다. 감사하게도 손님들이 이 청년을 안타까워하며 몹시도 사랑해 주었습니다. 2주 정도 집에 갔다가 다시 라브리로 돌아오는 이 청년, “여기가 바로 제가 있을 곳이에요 (This is where I belong)”라고 말한 이 청년이 피난처 되시는 하나님을 만나도록 기도해 주시길 부탁드립니다.

그런가 하면 유명한 네덜란드 개혁신학자인 헤르만 바빙크의 <개혁교의학>을 읽으며, 어려운 내용을 나누어준 청년도 있었습니다. 정확한 내용 이해와 설명, 질문에 대한 대답도 곧잘 하는 그를 바라보며 하나님께서 그를 좋은 일꾼으로 키우고 계심에 감사와 영광을 돌렸습니다. 이 외에도 진로를 찾는 청년들, 대학 진학을 앞두고 두려움과 걱정이 많은 청년들, 하나님을 가까이하고 싶은 이들 등 다양한 손님들이 매서운 바람을 뚫고 양양까지 왔습니다. 하나님께서 지금도 그들과 함께 계시기를 기도합니다.

누군가 “라브리는 오고 싶다고 해서 오는 곳이 아니다.”라고 말하더군요. 자기도 여러 번 오려고 했지만, 꼭 필요할 때 오게 되었다고요. 그렇습니다. 라브리는 성령께서 인도해 주시지 않으면 아무나 아무 때나 올 수 있는 곳이 아닙니다. 부족하기 짝이 없고 죄짓는 일에 발 빠른 저희 간사들이 성령께서 보내 주시는 분들을 같은 성령의 도우심과 성령께 순종함으로 잘 섬기도록 기도해 주시길 부탁드립니다.

그리고 좋은 간사들을 보내 주시도록 오늘도 기도해 주세요. 제 남편이 올해 70입니다. 은퇴해야 하는 때가 된 거지요. 좋은 간사팀을 만들어 주고 은퇴할 때까지 국제 라브리의 양해를 얻거나, 올봄의 영국에서 열리는 국제회의에서 은퇴 시기가 늦추어진다면 좀 더 일할 수 있겠지요. 사실 은퇴 시기보다는 주님의 뜻이 더 중요합니다. 저희 부부가 떠나는 날까지 하나님께 순종하도록 기도해 주십시오. 얼마 전에 여호수아서를 읽으며, 모세의 명령에 대한 그의 순종에 머리가 숙여졌습니다. 모세는 이미 세상을 떠나고 없는데도 여호수아는 모세 앞에 있는 것처럼 순종하였습니다. 이에 비해 저희는 나이가 70살인데도 살아 계신 하나님 앞에 순종하는 습관이 안 되어 아직도 한발씩 늦게 순종합니다.

작년 가을에 간사가 된 혜진이는 열심히 일하고 열심히 공부하고 있습니다. 중학교 때부터 일어를 해왔는데, 마치 하나님께서 한국 라브리에 일본 사람 보낼 날을 오랫동안 기다려 오신 것처럼, 혜진이가 일을 시작하자마자 일본 학생을 보내 주셨습니다. 커버넌트신학교의 온라인 수업도 재미있게 하고 있습니다. 많은 분들이 혜진이의 장학금을 보내 주셔서 저희는 놀라며 감사하고 있습니다. 혜진이의 건강은 하나님께서 많이 회복시켜 주고 계십니다. 그러나 아직도 소화에 어려움이 많고 디스크로 고생하고 있는 혜진이를 위해 계속 기도해 주십시오.

또한 라브리 재정을 위해서도 기도해 주십시오. 모두가 어려운 때입니다만, 하나님께서 저희가 먹고 일하고 집 고치는데 필요한 헌금을 보내 주시기를 같이 기도해 주십시오. 혹사당하다시피 일한 부엌의 오븐이 교체를 기다리고 있고, 수많은 간사들이 살다간 백암당 앞에는 시멘트가 침하 되어 수리가 시급한 상태입니다.

이번 주일 (2월 16일) 오후 2시에는 정다운마을에서 양양라브리교회 설립 감사 예배를 드립니다. 다과회는 오후 3시에 라브리에서 가집니다. 정다운마을이 중증장애자 복지원이라 많은 사람들이 찾아가면 안 되기 때문에, 예배에는 순서를 맡은 사람들만 참석하고, 라브리에서는 교제 시간을 가집니다. 1992년에 정다운마을이 개원한 이래로, 38교회 김동일, 곽루디아 목사가 소수의 장애자들을 모아 예배를 드렸고, 라브리 간사들과 양양의 많은 목사님들이 약 20년간 한 달에 한 번씩 설교로 도왔습니다. 코로나 펜데믹 기간에는 예배를 드리지 못하다가 2023년 여름에 코로나가 해제되고 난 후에, 정다운마을 기도가족들이 라브리 가족들과 예배를 드리고 싶다고 하여 같이 예배를 드리게 되었습니다. 소속교단은 라브리를 세운 프란시스 쉐퍼 목사가 설립한 국제장로교회 (IPC)이며, 담임은 이상기 목사입니다. 라브리와 정다운마을이 위치한 구룡령은‘아흔아홉 구비가 용이 지나간 것처럼 구불거리는 백두대간 상의 고갯길’이라는 말이며, 일곱 개 마을에 불교와 미신이 가득하며, 교회가 없는 곳입니다. 새로 시작되는 교회를 위해 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.

이번 여름에는 그동안 멈추었던 기독교세계관학교를 다시 시작하려고 합니다. 나라도 시끄럽고 정치 운동하는 사람들이 이런저런 학교를 세우고 있는 이런 때일수록 하나님의 말씀으로 세상을 분별하여 시대를 살아내는 청년들을 키워야 할 필요가 더 크지 않을까요? 기도로 이 일에 함께 해 주시기를 부탁드립니다.

새해가 되어도 찾아뵙고 인사도 드리지 못하고, 한 번도 만난 적이 없는 분들도 있지만, 늘 기도해 주시고 헌금을 보내 주셔서 감사드립니다. 저희는 사정을 다 모르지만, 우리 주님은 알고 계시기에 그 분에게 기도를 드립니다. 훗날 하나님 나라에 가면 뵙겠지요? 예수님의 십자가 덕을 톡톡히 보았다고, 그 사랑의 빚은 역시 갚을 능력이 없어 그것도 예수님에게 미루어 놓았다고 말하며 웃겠지요? 머리 숙여 감사드립니다.

Dear praying family,

I pray that this will be a year in which you can fully enjoy our God (portion, inheritance). The bitter cold wind from the north has frozen the whole world, but I would like to share with you that God is still working here, and I would like to ask you to pray for us.

2025 began with the passing of my mother-in-law (the mother of InKyung). She was 91 years old and slowly lost her strength. Eventually her breathing grew weak, and she quietly left this world and went to heaven, where she had longed to go. After losing her husband ten years ago, her most important activity became prayer.

She would carefully read our L’Abri prayer letters and pray for the people mentioned. She would ask how the person she was praying for was doing and specifically what she should pray for. After a while, she would remember the person exactly and ask the next question. We are often taken aback that we have so many people praying, including you, reading our letters carefully. Thank you very much.

She has gone to heaven, leaving behind a beautiful image in our memories. We lost not only a mother but also a friend who worked with us and consistently prayed for us. Whenever I think of her, I recall her resting in our L’Abri arboretum. As I grieve, I remember God’s promises that she will rise again with His power on the day of resurrection and that we will be able to meet each other cheek by jowl again.

Do you believe in the resurrection? Or is it merely a 'hopeful thought' for you? The traces of resurrection can be seen all around us in nature every spring. Trees and grass that seemed dead through the winter come back to life when spring arrives. Jesus said, "Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit." (John 12:24, ESV) C. S. Lewis also wrote in Miracles, “The total pattern [of Death and Rebirth] is there in Nature because it was first there in God.”

Jesus, although God, was born as a human, died, and was resurrected according to His laws. Therefore, we who believe in Him will also be resurrected. Doesn’t it make sense? I have sent off both of my and InKyung’s parents and have come to long for the resurrection even more. I look forward to meeting them in the new heaven and the new earth, where we will serve God completely and love each other. I hope to see you, our dear praying family, there as well.

It wasn't easy for me to start the L’Abri term soon after the funeral. It happened that I forgot my meal turn. How would I have been able to get through the month of January without Kwang-sik & Nam-jeong, Tae-yoon & Hyun-ji, as well as one-year-old Aru, Da-yeon, Akiho, and Jin-kyung? I thank God for the wonderful helpers God sent during this time.

Unlike summertime, the cold winter is the best season to study and explore one's own questions. This is because the weather is cold and outdoor activities are limited. A young woman who graduated from a christian alternative school and started grappling with the faith in college recently came. She read books about Christianity, but she still had a hard time believing. This time, she decided to read the Bible itself. She thought she had already known it, but she read it as if she were reading it for the first time. She read the Gospel of John, and was struck by chapter 1, verse 14: “The Word became flesh.” “Why did he have to become flesh? If it were me, I would not have made that choice. Instead of welcoming Jesus, humans killed him? Why did he still choose to come down?”

As this young woman continued to read the Gospel of John, she was amazed by Jesus' conversations and was surprised by the parables. However, she did not want to understand why Jesus had to bring suffering upon himself. Sadly, this is where she left off by the end of January. Please pray for her. Please pray that she will be able to accept and believe in her heart and mind Jesus as her Savior and the Lord.

There was also a young woman who came to L’Abri after being in a cult for several months. She met with her tutor every day to learn the Evangelical and Orthodox Christian doctrine and to disgorge what the cult taught her. She also had tea time seminars to present what she learned from the tutor and answer questions from other young people. Her situation was difficult, because her family was involved. The tutor in charge had to tell her mother about the cult. Please pray for this woman who went home for about two weeks and returned to L’Abri saying, “This is where I belong.” Please pray that she would meet the true God, who is her real refuge.

There was also a young man who parsed through difficult content while reading Reformed Dogmatics by Herman Bavinck, a Dutch reformed theologian. As I watched him accurately understand and explain the content, I gave thanks and glory to God for raising him as a good leader. In addition, various guests came to Yangyang, braving the bitter wind, including young people looking for their path, feeling worried about going to college, and seeking to grow closer to God. I pray that God is still with them.

Someone recently said, “L’Abri isn’t a place you come to just because you want to.” He said he tried to come many times, but he came when he really needed to. That’s right. L’Abri is not a place where anyone can come at any time unless the Holy Spirit leads them. Please pray that we, workers can serve well those whom the Holy Spirit sends us. Please pray that we will depend on and be obedient to the same Holy Spirit.

Please continue to pray that God would send us more good workers. My husband is turning 70 years old this year, which means he is near retirement age. Please pray that we would obey God until our last days. We believe that obedience is more important than the timing of retirement. Recently, while reading the Book of Joshua, we were surprised to see Joshua’s obedience to God’s commands. Even though Moses had already passed away, but Joshua obeyed as if he were still stand before Moses. We should develop the habit of obeying the living God one step at a time.

Hae-jin, who became a worker last fall, has been working and studying hard. She has been learning Japanese since middle school, and by the grace of God, He brought a Japanese person to Korea L’Abri as soon as Hae-jin started working. She is continuing to enjoy her online classes at Covenant Theological Seminary. We are surprised and thankful that many people have sent Hae-jin scholarships. God is greatly restoring Hae-jin’s health. Please continue to pray for Hae-jin, who still has a lot of digestion problems and suffers from a herniated disc.

Please also pray for our finances. These are difficult times for everyone, but please pray with us that God will supply our needs to eat, work, and repair L’Abri houses. An oven in my kitchen is waiting for replacement, and the cement in front of Baekamdang, where many of the workers and helpers used to live, is sinking and in urgent need of repair.

On Sunday, February 16, we will hold a service to thank establishing the L’Abri Chapel as a church at Jeongdaun Center and high-tea will be held after the service at L’Abri. Jeongdaun Center is a rehabilitation center for severely disabled people. Since Jeongdaun Center opened in 1992, Dong-il and Lydia Kim of ‘The 38th Parallel Church’ have gathered a small number of disabled people to worship. After the 38th Parallel church was closed, L’Abri workers and many pastors across Yangyang have helped preach once a month for about 20 years. The worship was not allowed during the COVID-19 pandemic for three years. After pandemic restrictions were lifted in the summer of 2023, the Christians of Jeongdaun asked us to worship with the L’Abri family.

Since then, we have been holding service together at Jeongdaun. The new church belongs to the International Presbyterian Church (IPC) founded by Francis A. Shaffer, who started L’Abri, and the senior pastor is Pastor Sang-ki Lee. Guryongnyeong, where L’Abri and Jeongdaun Village are located, means “passing through the Baekdudaegan Mountains that wind like nine dragons passing through valleys.” There are seven villages in Guryongnyeong. Buddhism is common, and there are many superstitions and no church. Please pray for a church to grow in this location.

This summer, we plan to restart the Christian Worldview School that had been on hiatus. In these times when our country is chaotic and people involved in political movements are establishing various schools, isn't it more important to raise young people who can discern the world through God's Word? Please join us in prayer for this work.

  • Presenters: Each person writes and presents a biblical perspective on a topic of interest. For those who find it difficult to prepare alone, a preliminary meeting will be held, and if necessary, a 1:1 meeting with a worker or research fellow can be arranged.

Even though it is a new year, I cannot visit and greet many of you in person, and there are some of you I have never met. Thank you for always praying for us and sending us donations. We do not know your situations, but our Lord knows, and we pray to Him. When we enter the kingdom of God, we will see each other. I will laugh with joy and say that I have been fully benefited by the cross of Jesus. I couldn’t repay the debt of love. I would ask our Lord “Could you repay for me the debt of love I owed our praying family?”
