존경하는 기도가족에게 올립니다.

라브리에도 봄이 왔습니다. 가까이 사는 집사님들이 정리해 준 철쭉 담장에는 흰색, 분홍색, 빨강색 철쭉이 흐드러지게 피었습니다. 산림청에서는 몇 년 전에 불이 났던 라브리 뒷산을 말끔하게 간벌해 주었습니다. 저희는 텃밭 준비를 끝냈습니다. 2년 이상 끌었던 코로나 팬데믹 뒤라 그런지, 오랜만에 진짜 봄이 왔다는 것을 실감합니다.

먼저 코로나 때문에, 가족 중에 편찮으시거나 심한 후유증이 남았거나 돌아가신 분들이 있는 분들에게는 대단히 죄송하게 생각하며, 주님의 위로가 함께 하시기 바랍니다. 지칠 때가 되었지만 여전히 라브리 뒷산과 별채를 위해 계속 기도하시는 분들에게 감사드리며, 어려운 시기를 기도와 헌금으로 함께 해 주신 모든 분들에게 특별히 감사를 드립니다.

그러나 아직 봄이 오지 않은 땅도 많습니다. 정의가 무너진 곳, 선택적 공정이 판을 치는 곳, 악이 권세를 부리는 곳이 그런 땅입니다. 전쟁 중인 우크라이나와 분쟁 지역에도 속히 평화가 찾아오기를 계속 기도하시기 바랍니다. 하나님은 자신이 나누어 준 권력과 재물과 시간을 남용하거나 오용하는 국가나 개인을 지금도 지켜보고 계십니다.

코로나 중에 가장 유익한 시간을 보낸 사람은 삼원 간사입니다. 지금은 상담학 석사 과정 마지막 임상 실습 학기를 보내고 있는데, 공부한 것이 하나님의 나라를 위해 유용하게 사용되도록 기도를 부탁드립니다. 중단되었던 외부강의 신청이 들어오고 있어서 다시 대중 앞에 서는 것에 긴장이 됩니다. 창희 간사는 오늘 오후에 모교 고신대 의대에서 특강을 하게 되며, 제 아내와 저는 5월 이후에 몇몇 교회와 학교로부터 강의 부탁을 받아 놓고 있습니다.

아직 코로나가 완전히 종식된 것은 아니지만, 5월 9일부터 주님이 보내 주실 손님들을 맞이할 준비를 하고 있습니다. 싱가포르에서 오는 청년도 있고, 선생님들이 학생 10여 명을 데리고 온다는 소식도 있고, 미국의 심장부에 사는 슐튼 교수가 7월 학기를 도와주러 오고 싶다는 편지도 받고 저희는 벌써 기대에 부풀어 있습니다. 8월 12-14일에 있을 <기독교세계관포럼>에서 자기가 연구한 글을 발표하겠다는 사람들이 많아 감사드립니다. 링크를 참고하시고, 신앙과 사회 문제에 대해 기독교 세계관으로 조망한 청년들의 따끈따끈한 글들이 쏟아져 나오도록 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.

교회마다 코로나 기간에 청년들이 교회를 떠나거나 예수님과 멀어진 것을 걱정하고 있습니다. 각 교회나 라브리에서 이번 여름에 청년들이 다시 주님 앞으로 돌아와 성경을 성경대로 믿는 사람들이 되도록 기도해 주시기를 부탁드립니다. 저는 요즘 사도행전을 공부하고 있는데, 8장의 사마리아 전도에서 빌립이 전도한 사람 중에 마술사로 알려진 시몬은 말씀을 받고 세례까지 받았으나, 알고 보니 거짓 회심자였습니다.

시몬이 거짓 회심자라는 증거가 몇 가지 있습니다.

1) 사도 베드로와 요한이 예루살렘에서 내려와서 안수하니 성령이 오시고 병이 낫는 것을 보고는, 단테가 잘 지적했듯이, 돈으로 성령을 사려는 ‘성직 혹은 성물 매매의 죄(simony)’를 지었기 때문입니다. (사도행전 8:18, 19) 시몬이 “이 권능을 내게도 주어”라고 한 것을 보면, 성령을 자기 사업에 이용 가치가 있다고 생각했던 것으로 보입니다. 그리고 시몬이 “누구든지 내가 안수하는 사람은”이라고 한 것을 보면, 성령이 하나님 아버지와 그리스도로부터 나오시지 않고, 자기 “손”에서 나올 수 있는 능력이라고 생각한 것이 아닌가 생각합니다.

2) 사도 베드로가 경고한 내용을 보면 시몬은 복음과 아무 관계가 없는 사람이었습니다. (사도행전 8:20-24) 시몬은 하나님 앞에서 마음이 바르지 못한 사람, 혹은 정직하지 못한 사람이었습니다. “이 도에는 네가 관계도 없고 분깃 될 것도 없느니라.”(8:21)는 말씀처럼, 시몬은 복음 혹은 복음 전하는 사역과는 상관없는 사람이었습니다. 그리고 시몬은 베드로의 경고를 듣고 두려워서 기도 부탁을 하기는 했지만, 회개하지는 않은 사람이었습니다. 가끔 기도 부탁은 기만 수단이거나 책임을 회피하는 꼼수가 되기도 한다는 것을 저도 잘 압니다.

3) 초대교회의 순교자였던 저스틴의 말에 의하면, “시몬은 그 후에 로마를 방문하고 황제 클라디우스에 의해 신으로 칭송을 받을 정도로 이단의 괴수가 되었다.”고 합니다. 이것이 사실이라면, 그의 회심은 종교 사기이며 명백한 거짓 회심이었습니다.

그러면 거짓 회심자를 방지할 수 있는 비결이 있을까요? 비결이라는 것은 없지만, 몇 가지 조심 할 수는 있다고 생각합니다.

1) 말장난에 속지 말아야 합니다. 일반적으로는 “말씀을 받았다.”(8:14)고 하는 것은 “예수를 믿었다.”는 말로 통합니다. 그러나 그 말을 “성령을 받았다.”고 생각하거나 “회개를 했다.”라고 기계적으로 생각하지 말아야 합니다.

시몬과 같은 사람들이 “말씀을 잘 들었습니다.”라고 말할 때, 그것은 “말씀이 마음에 들었습니다.”라는 말로 들어야지, “말씀대로 살아보겠습니다.” 혹은 “예수님을 믿겠습니다.”라는 말로 들어서는 안 됩니다. 요즘은 내용이나 의미가 텅 빈 “교회 언어”나 “종교적 레토릭”이 늘어나고 있습니다. 특히 지도자들은 “말씀에 은혜를 많이 받았습니다.”는 말을 새겨서 들어야 하는 이유가 여기에 있습니다.

2) 감정적인 흥분을 조심해야 합니다. 사도행전을 기록한 누가는 사람들이 이적과 복음에 “매우 기이히 여기고 놀랐다”(사도행전 3:9, 10)는 것과 “마음에 찔려”(사도행전 2:37)라는 것을 구분했습니다. “그들이 이 말을 듣고 마음에 찔려 베드로와 다른 사도들에게 물어 이르되 형제들아 우리가 어찌할꼬 하거늘.”(사도행전 2:37) 아무리 감정적으로 이상하게 여기고 많이 놀랐다고 하더라도, 마음에 찔리고 자기 생각을 바꾸고 회개하지 않으면 진정한 회심은 일어나지 않습니다.

표와 같이, 단어 차이는 미묘하지만 그 결과는 큽니다. 베드로는 “마음에 찔려”라는 것을 좀 더 구체적으로 설명하여, 하나님의 말씀을 듣고 죄의 깨우침과 진실한 회개, 죄 사함에 대한 확신과 성령의 임재로 이어진다고 이야기했습니다. “베드로가 이르되 너희가 회개하여 각각 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 세례를 받고 죄 사함을 받으라 그리하면 성령의 선물을 받으리니.”(사도행전 2:38)

“기이히 여기며” (사도행전 3:10)

단어뜻: 감정적으로 충격을 받거나 두려움을 갖는 것
의미: 감정적인 충격을 받고 이상하게 여기지만, 놀란 정도는 아니다.

“놀라니” (사도행전 3:10)

단어뜻: 마음의 평정을 잃어버리거나 경악하거나, 망연자실한 상태
의미: 감정적으로 놀라고 흥분하고 들뜨지만, 괴로워하지는 않는다.

“찔려” (사도행전 2:37)

헬라어: κατενιγημαι (katanygemai)
단어뜻: 감정적으로 영향을 받아 가슴을 쥐어뜯을 정도로 몹시 괴로워하는 상태
의미: 감정적으로 깊게 영향을 받고 놀라고 난 후에 몹시 괴로워한다.

회심은 구원의 과정 중에 제일 중요한 “사죄, 즉 씻음을 받았다”(과거)는 것과 관계된 것입니다. 처음이 잘못되면 그 후에 따라오는 “새롭게 되는 것”과(현재), “회복”(미래)이 일어날 수가 없습니다. “그러므로 너희가 회개하고 돌이켜 너희 죄 없이 함을 받으라 이같이 하면 새롭게 되는 날이 주 앞으로부터 이를 것이요, 또 주께서 너희를 위하여 예정하신 그리스도 곧 예수를 보내시리니, 하나님이 영원 전부터 거룩한 선지자들의 입을 통하여 말씀하신 바 만물을 회복하실 때까지는 하늘이 마땅히 그를 받아 두리라.”(사도행전 3:19-21)

3) 삶의 변화를 도와야 합니다. 요즘같이 개인주의적이고 물질주의적인 시대에는 혼자 내버려 두지 말고 좋은 교회나 공동체에서 다른 형제, 자매들과 교제하고 양육을 받도록 돕는 것이 필요합니다. 자기 야망을 버리게 하고, 세상의 구석구석에 들어가서 섬기는 책임을 잘 감당하도록 지켜보아야 합니다. 그리고 땀 흘려 버는 돈을 자기 것이 아니라 하나님의 것으로 잘 관리하는 법을 배우는 것도 필요합니다. 루터는 “회심에는 세 가지가 필요한데, 머리의 회심과 가슴의 회심, 그리고 지갑의 회심이다.”라는 말을 남겼습니다. 삶의 질서가 잡히지 않으면, 돈이나 원망, 산만함 등 각종 유혹을 이기지 못하고 사탄의 반격에 쓰러지게 됩니다. (사도행전 5:1-11, 6:1, 2)

회심에는 사람마다 차이가 있고, 거짓 회심자들이 있어도 눈치를 채지 못한 경우가 많이 생기기 때문에, 성령의 인도로 각 사람을 조심스럽게 도와야 합니다. 이번 봄과 여름에도, 여러분을 통해 길 잃은 청년들이나 거짓 회심자들이 돌아오는 일이 많이 일어나도록 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.

L'Abri Newsletter, May 2022

Dear Praying Family,

Spring has arrived at L'Abri. White, pink, and red azaleas bloomed profusely pruned by JaeYong and KawangShik who live nearby. The Forest Service thinned the mountain trees behind L'Abri, which had been on bush fire a few years ago. We have finished preparing vegetable gardens. Maybe it's after the corona pandemic that dragged on for more than two years, so I realize that spring has come after a long time.

First of all, I am very sorry to those in the family who are ill, have severe effects, or have died because of the coronavirus, and I hope the Lord's comfort will be with you. Tirelessly, I would like to thank those who continue to pray for the mountain behind L'Abri and the Old Gas Station House. I am incredibly grateful to all those who have been with us through prayers and donations during difficult times.

However, there are many places where spring has not yet come. Such land is where justice is twisted and evil reigns supreme. Please continue to pray for peace to come soon to the warring Ukraine and conflict zones. God is still watching over nations and individuals who abuse or misuse the power, wealth, and time He bestowed upon them.

The person who had the most valuable time during the corona was SamWon. She is currently in the 4th semester of clinical practice in the counseling program. Please pray that what she has studied will be useful for the Kingdom of God. Changhee will give a memorable speech at the medical school of his alma mater Koshin University this afternoon. I am a little nervous about standing in front of people again for a lecture that has been stopped because of Coronavirus. Since May, my wife and I have invitations from several churches and schools.

Although the Coronavirus is not entirely over yet, we are preparing to welcome the guests the Lord will send from May 9th. We are already full of anticipation after receiving a letter from Prof. Schulten, who lives in the heart of the United States wants to help in July. A Singaporean is coming, and some teachers bring in about ten students. I am grateful to a few people who will present their papers at the Christian Worldview Forum on August 12-14. Please refer to the program announcement and pray that the fresh ideas of young people who try to look religious and social issues in Christian perspectives will present.

Every church is worried about young people leaving the church or moving away from Jesus during the coronavirus. In each church or L'Abri, I ask you to pray that many of them might come back to the Lord this summer and become Bible-believing Christians. I am currently studying the Acts. Philip preached in Samaria in Chapter 8, Simon, known as a magician, received the word and was baptized, but it turned out that he was a false convert.

There is some evidence that Simon was a false convert.

1) When the Apostles, Peter and John came down from Jerusalem and laid their hands on them, seeing the Holy Spirit coming and many paralytics and cripples being healed, as Dante pointed out, Simon committed the ‘simony of buying the Holy Spirit with money.’ (Acts 8:18, 19) When Simon said: "Give me this power also," he felt that the holy spirit was worthy of use to make money. And when Simon said, "Whoever I lay my hands on," I think he thought that the Holy Spirit was a power that could come out from his "hand," not from God the Father and Christ.

2) Considering at the warnings of the Apostle Peter, Simon was a man who had nothing to do with the gospel. (Acts 8:20-24) Simon was dishonest or dishonest before God. The saying goes, "You have no part in this way, and you have nothing to share" (8:21). Simon had nothing to do with the ministry of the gospel as well. And Simon, who heard Peter's warning, was afraid and asked for prayer, but he did not repent. I am aware that sometimes asking for prayer can be a deception or a trick to evade responsibility.

3) According to Justin, a martyr of the early church, "Simon visited Rome and became a monster of heresy to such an extent. He was praised as a god by the emperor Claudius." His conversion was a religious fraud and an outright false conversion, if this is true.

Is there a secret to preventing false converts? I believe there is no such trick, but there are a few things you can be careful about.

1) Don't be fooled by religious rhetoric. Generally speaking, "I have received the word" (cf. 8:14) means "I believed in Jesus." However, we should not think of those words mechanically as "received the Holy Spirit" or as "I repented." When people like Simon say, "I have listened to the word," it should be heard as "I seemed to like the word," not "I believe in Jesus." These days, more and more "church language" or "religious rhetoric" is empty of content or connotative meaning. In particular, this is why leaders should listen carefully to the words, "I received a lot of grace from the Word today."

2) Beware of emotional excitement. Luke, who wrote the book of Acts, made a distinction between those who were "wondered”, “amazed" (Acts 3:9, 10), “astonished” (8:13) and "pierced in the heart" (Acts 2:37). No matter how emotionally wondered, amazed, and astonished you may be, true converts is pierced in your heart and changed your minds and repented sins. If not, the false converts can be happened. As the table shows, the word differences are subtle, but the results are enormous. Peter explained more specifically what it means to be "pierced in the heart" and said that hearing the word of God leads to true repentance, the forgiveness of sins, and the presence of the Holy Spirit. "And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (Acts 2:38, ESV).

Meaning: Emotionally very surprised and astonished, but not distressed

“cut to” (Acts 2:37)

Greek: κατενιγημαι (katanygemai)
Definition: Being emotionally distressed or affected sharply to the point of ripping your chest out
Meaning: Emotionally so distressed and to be pierced

Conversion has to do with being "washed or blotted out" the penalty of sins (past), the essential part of the process of salvation. If the beginning goes wrong, the "refreshing" the power of sins (present) and "restoring" the presence of sins (future) that follow cannot happen. "Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago." (Acts 3:19-21, ESV).

3) Help change life. It is necessary not to be left alone but to associate with other brothers and sisters in a good church or community and help them to be nurtured. You have to let go of their selfish ambitions and watch as you go into every corner of the world and fulfill your responsibilities to serve. And it is also necessary to learn to manage the sweaty money that belongs to God, not yours. Luther said, "Conversion requires three things: the conversion of the mind, the conversion of the heart, and the conversion of the wallet." If life is not in order, we will not be able to overcome various temptations such as money, resentment, and distraction, and we will fall to Satan's counterattack. (Acts 5:1-11, 6:1, 2)

Conversion differs from person to person, and many false converts go unnoticed, so we must carefully help each person with the guidance of the Holy Spirit and wisdom. Please pray that much-lost youth and false converts will come back through you this spring and summer.
