2019년 1월 라브리 소식편지

존경하는 라브리 기도 가족에게 올립니다.

추운 날씨 속에서 건강하신지요? 새해가 밝은지도 1주일이 지났지만 늦게나마 인사를 올립니다. 올해에도 여러분의 기도와 격려를 등에 업고 신나게 일을 할 수 있게 되어 매우 기쁩니다. 여러분들은 어떤 각오와 기대로 새해를 맞이하셨나요?

이곳 동해안에는 올해도 어김없이 일출을 보기 위해서 찾아온 수많은 방문객들로 가득 찼습니다. 라브리 앞에 있는 서울양양고속도로와 56번 국도가 주차장이 될 정도였으니까요. 새해 첫날, 안타깝게도 큰 사고가 터지고 말았습니다. 원인 불명의 화재가 라브리 뒷동네인 송천 떡 마을에서 시작된 불이 라브리 뒷산 전체와 나중에는 라브리 앞산까지 집어 삼켜버린 것입니다. 라브리는 사방이 불로 에워싸였습니다.

수십 대의 소방차와 수 백 명의 소방대원들이 라브리 마당을 오고 갔습니다. 그 중에 최첨단 화학소방차를 비롯한 소방차 몇 대는 라브리 모든 건물 10m 뒤에 물을 뿌리는 등 방어선을 치고는 밤새 건물 보호 작전을 벌였습니다.

마침 라브리를 방문하신 삼원 간사 모친, 몇 주일 전에 결혼한 신혼 부부 등 라브리에 있던 모든 가족들은 대피 명령을 받고 신속하게 피했고, 인경 간사와 의진씨, 그리고 저는 현장에 남아 소방대원들을 도우며 화재 진압 진행 상황을 밤새 지켜보았습니다. 산불은 약 20 시간 만에 진압되었고, 라브리 건물은 아무 곳도 화재 손상을 입지 않았고 아무도 다치지 않았습니다. 그러나 일부 나무와 낙엽이 다 탔고 생물들이 다 죽었을 것으로 보입니다.

밤새 많은 분들이 뉴스를 듣고 기도로 도와 주셨습니다. 듣기로는 철야 기도를 한 교회도 있었다고 합니다. 가까운 속초, 강릉으로부터 심지어 캐나다에서도 산불 소식을 듣고 연락과 위로의 메시지를 보내 주시기도 했습니다. 기도해 주시고 걱정해 주신 모든 분들께 다시 한 번 감사의 말씀을 드리고 싶습니다. 특히 밤새 고생하셨던 소방대원들과 의용소방대, 경찰, 공무원 등 약 700여명의 손길에도 깊은 감사를 드립니다.

무엇보다도 어미 닭이 병아리를 품듯이 라브리를 덮어 안고 보호해 주신 주님의 거대한 손길을 두 눈으로 지켜볼 수 있어서 영광스럽게 생각합니다. 너무 빠르지도, 그렇다고 너무 느리지도 않게, 밤새 바람을 이쪽저쪽으로 불게 하시어, 피난민들은 안전하게 대피할 수 있는 시간을 주시고 소방대원들은 무리하지 않고 진화작업을 할 수 있도록 일하신 주님의 신비한 솜씨에 아모스의 다음과 같은 말씀이 생각났습니다.

“보라 산들을 지으며 바람을 창조하며 자기 뜻을 사람에게 보이며 아침을 어둡게 하며 땅의 높은 데를 밟는 이는 그의 이름이 만군의 하나님 여호와시니라.” (아모스 4장 13절)

이번 산불 이후 라브리 식구들은 여러 가지 이야기를 나누었습니다. 우리가 그 동안 소홀히 했던 화재 예방에 미비한 점이 무엇이며 어떻게 개선을 할 것인가? 이러한 위기 상황에 직면했을 때 어떻게 성숙하게 대처를 할 것이며, 이를 손님들과 어떻게 실행할 것인가? 기독교인으로서 이러한 상황을 어떻게 바라보고 해석할 것인가? 저희가 놓치고 있었거나 잊어버린 점들이 의외로 많다는 것을 발견하고 반성할 수 있었던 귀한 시간이었습니다.

산불 후에 가장 힘들었던 것은 1월 7일부터 시작되는 겨울 학기를 예정대로 시작하는 것이었습니다. 아직도 바깥에는 연기냄새가 가득 차 있고, 여기저기에 하얗게 덮인 염화칼슘이나, 건물로부터 불과 10미터도 안 되는 거리에 남아있는 새까만 숯검정들을 볼 때면 다시 가슴이 쿵쾅거리는 듯합니다. 그러나 겨울 학기를 시작하기를 오랫동안 기다린 사람들에게 차마 오지 말라고 말 할 수가 없었습니다. 그런 사람들을 보내주시는 성령의 세미한 인도를 못 본 채 할 수 없었습니다. 대신에 학기를 짧게 운영하기로 하였습니다. 몇 가지 기도 부탁을 드립니다.

  1. 이번 화재로 인한 직접적인 재산 및 인명 피해는 없었지만, 대피할 때 전기를 차단한 것 때문에 현재 별채의 수도 파이프 동파로 인해 물이 나오지 않고 있는 상황입니다. 학기가 시작되기 전에 해결되기를 바랐지만, 결국 동파 상태로 학기를 시작하게 되었습니다. 별채 수도관을 포함하여 겨울 학기에 여러 설비가 말썽을 일으키지 않도록 기도 부탁드립니다.
  2. 간사들이 고도의 스트레스를 받은 상태에서 학기를 시작하게 되었습니다. 사방을 에워싼 불길을 밤새 지켜보아야 했던 간사들의 애간장이 새까맣게 타버렸거든요. 간사들이 지치지 않고 찾아오는 사람들을 잘 도울 수 있도록 기도해 주세요. 이번 겨울 학기는 2019년 1월 7일 ~ 2월 16일로 운영하며 중간에 몇 주간 휴식이 있습니다.
  3. 안전과 재정을 위해 기도해 주시기 바랍니다. 많은 사람들이 다녀가는 중에 안전사고가 나지 않도록 기도해 주시고, 이곳저곳에 필요한 재정이 채워지도록 기도해 주세요.

Dear L’Abri praying family,

It’s a bit late, but Happy New Year! I am delighted to be able to start another year of L’Abri work with your prayer and encouragement.

As usual, we started the year with an endless stream of tourists who came to see the sunrise in the east coast. Both the expressway to Seoul and the road in front of our house became a huge parking lot for most of the day. Disaster struck amidst the heavy traffic. A wildfire of unknown cause started in the Songcheon “rice cake” village nearby and engulfed not only the mountain behind L’Abri but also the hills in the front. We were surrounded by fire on all sides.

Dozens of fire trucks and hundreds of firefighters came and went throughout the night, our parking lot serving as the gathering spot. Several fire trucks, including a state-of-the-art chemical engine, helped set up a barrier behind our house by soaking a 10-meter wide strip of forest with water.

Staying with us were SamWon’s mother and a newlywed couple. They were evacuated as soon as possible along with the rest of the workers’ family. InKyung, Euijin, and I remained on the scene all night to keep watch and assist the firefighters. The wildfire was finally extinguished after about 20 hours. At L’Abri, no building was damaged and nobody was hurt. Many trees were burnt, however, and many wild animals must have been killed when the thick layer of fallen leaves caught fire.

Many people heard the news and prayed for us. Members of one church told us that they had prayed all night. We received messages of concern and comfort from as close as Sokcho and Gangneung and as far as Canada. I thank all of you for praying and worrying for us. I am also deeply grateful for the firefighters, volunteers, police, and town officials – over 700 of them – who worked all night to put the fire out.

Above all, I thank the Lord for covering L’Abri with His hands, holding it and protecting it in the middle of the fire like a hen protecting her chicks. God let the wind blow this way and that, neither too strongly nor too weak, so that everyone had time to evacuate and firefighters had space to carry out their duties. His mysterious work reminds me of the Book of Amos: “He who forms the mountains, creates the wind, and reveals his thoughts to man, he who turns dawn to darkness, and treads the high places of the earth – the Lord God Almighty is his name.” (Amos 4:13)

We talked about many things once we returned home. What are the weaknesses in our fire plan and how can we improve it? How should we react to a crisis like this and help our guests evacuate in an orderly manner? How should we as Christians understand situations like this? We realized that we had missed or forgotten many important things, and are thankful that we were given an opportunity for reflection.

Our most pressing difficulty was to prepare for the winter term, which was scheduled to begin immediately afterward. The whole area still smelled of smoke; our parking lot was covered in calcium chloride to prevent the firefighting water from freezing; and my heart still pounds when I see the burnt-out remains of leaves and branches only 10 meters away from the eaves of my house. But many people were waiting for us to open, and we could not tell them to change their plans. We could not ignore the Holy Spirit guiding these people to L’Abri. So we decided to start the term as planned, but shorten it a bit.

We have several prayer requests for you:

  1. As a result of the blackout caused by the wildfire, the water pipe to the old gas station has frozen solid. We tried to thaw it, but had to start the term without water in the old gas station. Please pray that the various equipment we depend on will not cause us too much trouble during the winter term.
  2. The workers started the winter term in a condition of high stress. Watching the mountains burn all around you all night burns your heart, too. Please pray that we will not be exhausted. Please pray that we will be able to help those who come to us. The winter term is from January 7 to February 16, with a short break in the middle.
  3. Please pray for safety and our finances. Many people come and go in this cold, dry weather. Please pray that everyone will be safe, and that God will provide what we need.
